Kai is a very versatile genderfree sewing pattern. Wearable in all seasons because you can easily wear it over a T-shirt or sweater. 

Here are some of Kai’s main features: 

• The frivolous jumpsuit with ruffle looks super cute. Leave out the ruffle and you have playful dungarees. 
• For the shoulder straps, you can choose between stretchy straps or straps with buttons and buttonholes. With both options, dressing and undressing is very easy. 
• The pattern gives you the option to make just the trouser part. And by adjusting the length you get a nice pair of shorts! 
• If your little child likes flowy dresses, just make the bodice with a skirt part and you have a wonderfully loose pinafore. Because the pinafore is a derivative of the dungarees, the armholes are the same depth and are meant to be worn over a T-shirt or sweater. Although it is also a great high summer dress without anything underneath! Nice to wear in all seasons. Again, you can opt to make it with or without a ruffle.
• Kids like to stuff their pockets full of fun, so we have provided pockets in the side seam as well as patch pockets.

• Both A4/letter and A0 pattern files come in a file where the seam allowance is included AND a seperate file where the seam allowance is not included (which is easier to work with if you want to do a lot of adjustments). All files have a layer per size so that you don’t have to trace your size onto a different sheet of paper and add seam allowance yourself. You can easily uncheck all the layers you don’t need and print only your size with seam allowance included. That way you can directly cut out what you have printed. Don’t forget to tell your copy shop to select the right layers!

Difficulty

Easy to intermediate (depending on the variation).

Kai is a perfect beginner’s project or a quick-fix project for more experienced sewers, as there are not too many difficult techniques involved. The easiest variation is the shorts variant. A more challenging project is the jumpsuit with ruffle, but even that one is quick to put together.

Fit

Kai has a lot of ease around the chest, so you can easily wear it over a loose T-shirt or a sweater, which makes it a piece for all seasons. For the same reason, the armholes are cut quite deeply.

The trousers have a barrel cut: the rounded side seam gives plenty of room on the hips and the legs are more tapered towards the hem. The length of the long trousers is best when it falls just at the ankles, so a bit cropped. If you make the garment keeping growth in mind, you can roll up the hems at the bottom to get the right length.

Fabric choice

For the variants with ruffle, all kinds of fabrics can be used, as long as they are not too stiff and thick. Think linen, gabardine, cotton twill, poplin, thin velvet, double gauze, french terry … 

For the dungarees variant, slightly stiffer fabrics such as denim like qualities and corduroy can also be used. 

WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND WASHING YOUR FABRIC BEFORE CUTTING.

Think about the environment and choose deadstock fabrics if you can. That way you give surplus fabrics from fashion brands a second life and they don’t end up in landfills. We source our quality deadstock designer fabrics at The Fabric Sales.

Fabric requirements 

The fabric lengths charts show how much fabric you will need for all variations, calculated on a standard fabric width of 140 cm - 1.55 yd. If your fabric is narrower, you will need more fabric length. For broader or narrower fabrics you can calculate how much fabric you will need by laying out the pattern pieces on the table according to your fabric width and measuring how much fabric length you will need accordingly.
